Happy Day Of The Goddess!

Friday the 13th comes with its own personal hang-ups around bad luck, misfortune and hazardous happenings. Some of you may choose to mark this ill-omened day in your calendar with a catastrophic celebration, or by heading to your local parlour to collect a famous Friday the 13th tattoo.

But what if I told you that before the patriarchy got their little grubby mitts all over it, Friday the 13th was actually recognised as the Day Of The Goddess?

In fact, the day was marked as a day to honour the Divine Feminine that lives in us all and to honour the cycles of creation and death and rebirth. Friday the 13th was also considered a very powerful day to manifest magick, honour creativity, and to celebrate beauty, wisdom, and nourishment of the soul.

In the planetary cycles, Friday is also Venus Day, and Venus is known for her sensuous tender charm, also known as the epitome of feminine energy. (Yes, we’ve all read Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus).

There is another significance to the number 13.

The number 13 is in fact the number of moon cycles that happen in a year, and this coincides with the number of menstruations a woman will have, often responding to the moon cycles.

Fun fact: The red witch bleeds on the full moon, and the white witch bleeds on the new moon. Which one are you?

Before women’s monthly cycles acquired unfavourable undertones in a modern society where we focus more on the inconvenience of the menstrual cramps and body tenderness, bleeding was in fact considered to embody divine and magical powers. The tenderness was understood to be our own intuition guiding us towards decisions that benefit our highest good, and the good of others. We are life givers after all.

But of course, in true predictability, this kind of feminine power and embrace did not serve the patriarchy, so the attempt to turn sacred feminine ceremony into something scary has man written all over it. But do not fear my dear, we’re claiming it back.

So this Friday the 13th be sure to embrace your sisterhood and the Goddess within. Remember you are a magickal being, with infinite potential to thrive on this Earth, you are here to live, love and feel eternal joy.

Celebrate the way you feel called - dance your way to the tampon aisle, howl the moon, pet all the black cats, buy that handbag you’ve been telling yourself you cannot afford, or drown yourself in flowers, go on, you deserve it.

Until next time bessies.
